Characterization and STEAL

In today’s class we took notes on characterization. We learned two different ways authors will portray their character. Direct characterization, when the author tells us the kind of character the person is. Indirect characterization, when the author uses different techniques to have us figure out the kind of character the person is. We learned an acronym that helps us understand these different techniques (STEAL). S stand for speak, T stands for thoughts, E stands for effects, A stands for actions, and L stands for looks. Lastly we did a worksheet where we had different characters from The Rockpile, and we had to provide of an example of each STEAL, and how that tells us a certain character trait about them.

The Rockpile PDF

In today’s block schedule class we read a story from James Baldwin. The story was called The Rockpile. The story was about a boy forbidden to go to a Rockpile on the street. The boy still ends up going and the brother is forced to tell the truth to the parents. We wrote questions asked by Mr. Rease, and followed him as he was reading.

Poem Presentation

In today’s class we presented our poems. We went up to the class and on the computer showed our poems. We read them aloud and had to tell them two themes of our poem. We spun a wheel to decide who would present. In the end I couldn’t present my poem because we were out of time.
